MyLifeFiles

MyLifeFiles

Basic life information, categorized and detailed for you. Choose the sections that relate to you. We all need some of these, like Medical Information, but some sections will not apply to you. Access the sections in any order you like, fill in your details, and save them on your computer or storage device. It will take you time to do thoroughly, but in the end, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your essential information is all organized, secure, and readily accessible. Update your information at least annually.

4 things to think about:

  1. Consider carefully where and how you will store your information and files. Choose a security approach that protects your information and gives you peace of mind.  Think a dedicated USB, an external hard drive, and/or a print version of each file.
  2. Create a back-up of your files – a print copy, or a copy of your USB.
  3. Complete all files that apply to you.
  4. You may want to attach documents with the files, and they aren’t all electronic. Keep a binder with clear sheet protector sleeves. If you are printing a hard copy of this planner, use these plastic sheets to hold copies of relevant documents, like a birth certificate or marriage certificate.

About This Planner

  • Keep your information collection in a very safe place – in a safe at home, if you have one available, or a secure hiding place that is known only to trusted loved ones.
  • You may prefer to keep original documents in a different safe place and insert only photocopies into the Planner binder.
  • Keep a hard copy of your Planner in a safe and secret place.
  • Consider purchasing a fireproof/waterproof safe bag to store everything.
  • Some sections, such as “Personal Information and Contacts,” will be easy to complete, while others require research and reflection. Complete the planner in stages. Start with the “Emergency Info Card”!

Update Your Information Regularly

  • Significant changes in your life such as: marriage, separation, divorce, birth of children or grandchildren, life-altering accident, serious illness, death of a spouse or partner, or a change of residence or the purchase of a vehicle may require changes.
  • Review your files annually even if there are no life changes to prompt you to do so, just to ensure that everything is up to date.
  • Life changes can have legal and financial ramifications.  Remember to date the new version, make a backup copy of the file, and delete old versions.
